Story Tower
Torrance Memorial Medical Center – Melanie and Richard Lundquist Tower

KPFF provided structural engineering services for a new hospital replacement tower at the Torrance Memorial Medical Center in Torrance, California. The new tower consists of a seven-story structure above grade, with a mechanical penthouse at the roof, and a below grade basement. The tower building is approximately 390,000 SF and is functionally connected to the existing East Tower and the North Tower through a tunnel at the basement level and a series of connectors at the first and second levels. The primary functions located within the tower include a central plant, central sterile supply, food service, diagnostics and treatment, intensive care unit, emergency department, patient rooms and a burn unit.

The main structural system of the tower consists of buckling restrained braced frames supported on a mat foundation system with anchor piles. KPFF participated in a design-assist approach with a general contractor and key subcontractors. In addition, there was a incremental review through the Office of Statewide Health and Planning Division (OSHPD).

In addition to the tunnel and connector structures noted, this project included a new stand-along partially subterranean emergency generator structure. KPFF also provided earth shoring services for all portions of the excavation adjacent to the existing hospital buildings. The exterior finish system was designed by KPFF collaboratively with the specialty contractors for concrete precast, metal panel and curtainwall and stick glazing systems.
