PIH Downey Hospital Voluntary Seismic Improvements and Upgrades

KPFF provided structural engineering services for a voluntary seismic upgrade to the 1967 5-story Nursing Tower, in order to meet the requirements of California State Bill 1953, while keeping the hospital in continuous operation. A combination of exterior and interior concrete and steel retrofit elements were installed throughout the structure, including an exterior buttress wall, supported on a deep pile foundation. Seismic Instrumentation was also provided to monitor future seismic ground motions.

Simultaneously KPFF assisted the hospital campus with a large expansion to its Emergency Department, as well as upgrades to its main entrance, courtyard, administrative area, loading dock, kitchen and dining area, Data Center, and CBX room. KPFF enjoyed opportunity to work with individual medical department leaders to modernize and upgrade their patient rooms, nurse stations, operating rooms, Family Birthing Center, Morgue, Mammography, Pharmacy, Diagnostics, Flouro Radiation, Interventional Radiology, and Nuclear Medicine departments.
