Parcel 88 Combined Habitat Site (Place of Circling Waters)

KPFF was Prime Consultant leading the engineering design of a site restoration to create over 30 acres of new mitigation areas, including restored and enhanced intertidal marsh, wetlands and upland habitat plus associated buffers to fulfill multiple regulatory mitigation obligations. This habitat restoration project included an independent remedial action, conducted in accordance with MTCA cleanup regulations, involving upland excavation and off-site disposal of approximately 255,000 tons of soils impacted by petroleum hydrocarbons, cPAHs, wood waste and metals (primarily arsenic). The site was a former gravel mine and dump for building materials, but had high value for habitat restoration due to its tidally-influenced location at the mouth of Hylebos Creek. Design included a public access view deck overlooking the habitat channels and LID stormwater facilities for treatment of the new public access parking area. This project was awarded the ACEC Washington 2012 Gold Award (Social, Economic, and Sustainable Design Consideration).
