Eden Hall Campus (25 miles north of the main campus) is home to the new Falk School of Sustainability and the Environment. Working with an integrated team, a Master Plan was developed, calling for 20 years worth of projects including a variety of LEED Platinum facilities. In addition, some are pursuing Living Building Challenge and Passive House certification. The intent is for all structures to be “living laboratories for sustainable living and sustainable technology.”

Built work to date includes the Field Lab, Dairy Barn Cafe and Library, a large Photovoltaic Canopy, dinning commons and student dormitories, High Tunnels and the Hoop House as well as significant landscape architecture featuring an outdoor amphitheater and wetlands. Future development will include additional housing, classrooms and other academic facilities.

Supporting the sustainability goals of the project, many innovative solutions were developed, including:

  • concrete mix designs with 50% cement replacement
  • e-use and conversion of the existing dairy barn structure into a cafe and library
  • the use of locally sourced building products
  • integrated radiant tubing into the structural slabs
