Working closely with the Dogpatch Neighborhood Association the team included three different design architects who designed three visually distinct buildings with unique materials, a nod to the eclectic neighborhood character. Adding to this character, an art installation mounted on the freeway side of the building gives the impression of a rabbit hopping by to the motorists on the freeway.
The units are a mix of town homes, studios, 1-, 2-, & 3-bedrooms with circulation and common areas that serve as informal community gathering places. The 5-story buildings also provides the adjacent neighborhood with an improved acoustic buffer along the raised I-280 Freeway.
A permanent shoring wall was designed to confine the soil beneath the CalTrans retaining wall and KPFF developed a way to integrate the shoring wall into the basement of Avalon Dogpatch saving significant time and money for the project.
