KPFF provided structural engineering services for the renovation and expansion of Washington University’s existing athletic complex. The $50 million, 110,000gsf, three- to four-story addition is located to the northwest of Francis Field on the south side of the existing Athletic Complex. The western portion of the existing Francis Field House and Gym was demolished to make way for the addition, while the eastern portion was renovated. The addition and renovated space contains locker rooms, fitness areas, a three-court gym, a suspended running track, meeting rooms, and support spaces.
The addition’s structure is steel with concrete over metal decking floors, and the exterior walls are composed of a combination of stone masonry and glass curtain wall.
The remaining Francis Portal structure was transformed into a two-story open space with a bridge to the new portion of the building, creating a grand entry to the facility.
