KPFF performed structural engineering services for this 27,000 SF, single-story, wood-framed warehouse located in downtown Louisville. The structure, over 100 years old, was renovated to house University of Louisville’s Fine Art Department’s Hite Art Institute. This pre-1900s building now houses office, classroom, and studio space for both faculty and students. Classes focus on ceramics, drawing, fiber, glass, painting, printmaking, sculpture, mixed media, book arts, and design.

The existing warehouse’s load was specified at 50 PSF, which is significantly less than what the renovation plans initially called for. KPFF analyzed the structural elements and strengthened the existing beams, columns, and joists, where required, in able for it to support the new, heavier loads that were required.

An open concept was a very important part of the design of this artistic space. KPFF provided framing details and cantilevered elements in both staircases leading up to the mezzanine level to ensure that occupants of the space would feel the continuous flow of the building.
