KPFF is the Structural Engineer of record for this $943-million, 245-bed medical specialty center. The new center will include advanced surgical, cancer and women and infants care. The project also includes a separate, 2-story, 39,306-sf Central Plant that was completed in early 2016. Jacobs Medical Center is connected to Thornton Hospital on multiple floors, which is also connected to the Sulpizio Cardiovascular Center and within walking distance to the Moores Cancer Center, all of which KPFF was the SEOR. Designed with a garden-based, low-carbon footprint, Jacobs has floor-to-ceiling windows to maximize natural light and promote healing along with outdoor courtyards and terraces. There is also a rooftop helicopter landing pad, dedicated family areas with lounges and kitchenettes on each inpatient floor and two underground floors for mechanical equipment and services, including a blood bank and inpatient pharmacy. The 12-story, 509,500-sf hospital began construction in early 2012 and is the first ground-up hospital to use Performance Based Design. Jacobs is set to open its doors in the fall of 2016.
