Master planning, cost estimating, and design of a terminal leased by Stevedoring Services of America and used by several shipping lines.  The project includes the design of an intermodal yard, on-terminal receiving and departure tracks, and the container yard expansion.  Our responsibilities also included coordinating with many interest groups:  BNSF and UP railroads, city planning, engineering, and building developments, and the Port of Seattle. Terminal 18 represents the largest design-build RFP for a marine terminal in the Pacific Northwest.  KPFF prepared the documents for the marine terminal portion, including a seismic upgrade of the existing wharf structure, reviewed the design-build proposals for the marine terminal facilities, and participated with the owner and Port of Seattle in the contractor interviews. Prior to the work being advertised as a design-build project, KPFF prepared approximately 50% complete plans for removal of all structures in a four-block area of Harbor Island to make room for a 90-acre expansion of Terminal 18.  This work included shut-down and removal of all utilities, removal of existing street improvements, and demolition of more than 100 structures ranging from office buildings to light industrial facilities.
