KPFF is providing structural engineering services for the nation’s largest healthcare provider, second only to the Veterans Health Administration. Their billion-dollar program includes upgrades to all their facilities throughout the mid-Atlantic region. In order to execute on the many projects planned, they are adopting a new philosophy for how to deliver their buildings. This includes templating departments, streamlining the delivery, and engaging partners for various components.
KPFF worked in partnership with ConXtech to use their proprietary, codified steel frame system. This allows for erection speeds of between 10,000 and 15,000 SF per day, which is 50% faster than a conventional structure. One of its unique characteristics its ability to keep field welding to a minimum. KPFF developed all detail connections: screen walls, bracing and slab edge conditions with little to no welding. Gravity connections created with a double angle or bent plate with large eccentricity allows for coping of flange and easy erection of the structure.
The South NOVA project is one of two hubs in the region that will provide all major ambulatory health services of a hospital, without an emergency department.
