The project included deepening of the existing berth through dredging from elevation -30 to -42, engineering and design of a submerged steel sheet pile wall, design and engineering of the wharf berthing and mooring fenders, upgrading of the mooring bollards to 100 tons through the use of carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer, and assessment of the existing concrete deck in order to rehabilitate the wharf decking. During the design process, KPFF assessed the existing mooring and fendering components and designed replacement components and structural strengthening to accommodate increased loads for larger vessels. KPFF also assessed the concrete deck, identified and mapped areas of spalls and delaminations for repair. In-house concrete forensic experts were utilized to determine the cause of the degradation mechanism, depth of deterioration, and soundness/durability of the underlying concrete in order to develop a repair scheme that will be durable, practical, minimize impacts to operations, and be economical.
