Design Engineer – Structural Glass / Façade

We have full-time and part-time opportunities available for structural design engineers of all experience levels, including new and future college graduates.

An engineer new to façade design will be mentored and trained by an experienced engineer. The role can be particularly beneficial for less seasoned engineers as it will expose them to design with a multitude of construction materials, including steel, concrete, aluminum, wood, and more. The familiarity with this breadth of materials gained from the design work will greatly assist an Engineer in Training (E.I.T.) with preparation for Professional and Structural Engineering examinations. E.I.T. certification is not a strict prerequisite, but it is strongly preferred for an entry-level engineer.

Experienced facade designers will immediately observe and come to appreciate KPFF’s emphasis on excellence, professionalism, and service. We draw upon and employ an engineer’s existing skills while simultaneously assisting their development in the discipline. Timely execution of responsibilities and accumulating expertise in the field are expected and will lead to growth opportunities within our firm. Professional Engineer (P.E.) certification is strongly preferred for an experienced engineer.

Design engineers in this position will be assigned projects with a significant emphasis on structural glass design. Previous experience with structural glass design is greatly appreciated but not required. Individuals with a strong grasp on engineering mechanics fundamentals and possessing swift assimilation skills will flourish in this role. Typical structural glass systems include glass fins, point-supported canopies, skylights, floors, and balustrades. Design methodologies utilized for design will include both computer-aided finite-element modelling and analytical methods.

Proficiency with Microsoft software is crucial to the role, especially Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Teams. Bluebeam software is used extensively for creation and manipulation of pdf documents. MathCAD software is preferred for design calculations, though Microsoft Excel or hand calculations are acceptable if so desired. RISA software is used for the design of complex structural members. SJ MEPLA and Dlubal software are used for finite element analyses; existing familiarity with finite-element modelling is preferred but not required.
