SoFi Stadium Mass Excavation, Tunnels & Ring Wall

Kiewit was responsible for the mass excavation of the SoFi stadium bowl 100’ deep from existing grade. The stadium bowl is encircled by a vertical wall approximately 4,200’ in circumference, and the wall is composed of a 90’ tall mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) wall by others and a 10’ tall cast-in-place (CIP) concrete wall by KPFF. Also included was the design and construction of a permanent tunnel that provides access for service vehicles to the playing field level. The tunnel runs approximately 600’ below grade and accommodates two lanes of truck traffic. The tunnel was designed following Caltrans seismic design criteria and standard specifications, and accommodates over 18” of seismic displacement due to the inherent flexibility of the MSE system that it interfaces with.

Interesting Project Facts:
  • 4,200-SF Ring Wall Encircling the Perimeter of the Sunken Stadium, Capping a 100’ Tall Mechanically Stabilized Earth Retention System
  • Vehicle Tunnel Providing Access from Grade to the Playing Field Level Below Ground
  • The Tunnel is Subject to Extraordinary Seismic Displacements due to the Flexibility of the Mechanically Stabilized Earth that it Passes Through
Additional Services Provided:
  • Site Development
  • Shoring
  • Bridge Design
