Bloedel Reserve/Educational Center


Bainbridge Island, Washington

KPFF was the structural engineer for this award-winning facility which serves as a semi-public arboretum. The center was designed to honor the late Virginia Merrill Bloedel. Wood portions of the building are supported on stone piers; the heavy timber is Douglas fir accented by very finely detailed steel connections.

Awards received: 

1992 Highest Honor Award from the American Institute of Architects,

1992 Wood Design Award from the American Wood Council,

1992 Grand Award from Associated General Contractors.
